The story of the boy Jesus in the temple happens the day after the big festival. After everyone clears out, there’s plenty of space for Jesus to remain and talk to the elders. His reasons for staying there after his parents and family have left are unclear, but his parents panic when they realize he’s not among their fellow travelers. After three days, they finally find Jesus in the temple among the teachers. “Why were you searching for me?” he asks. “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” Today we’ll explore the hidden life of Jesus’ childhood, particularly the roles of wisdom, faith community, and family. We’ll join in singing our favorite songs of the season that teach us about our faith.
