Why discipleship?

First Methodist’s Discipleship Pathway is a tool that connects us in community through God's abundant love to transform lives and the world by serving and growing together. Our virtual Discipleship Pathway is interactive, so we hope you will click through its various pieces to discover the many ways you can move through your faith and discipleship journey.

We want to encourage you and your family to take one more step to grow in love for God and your neighbor. Followers of Jesus mature by worshiping and learning together in an intergenerational community. We strive to offer high-quality, Christ-centered learning experiences that help people understand Scripture, faith, and their lives as they nurture supportive relationships with each other.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS:

The Politics of Jesus

Jesus was political. When he reached out to people who were poor and marginalized, he broke cultural norms. His nonviolent resistance in the face of death challenged the powers-that-be of the Roman Empire. Jesus was not, however, partisan. In America today, he wouldn’t register for a particular party. Rather, he would embody an ethic of lavish love for God and neighbor. As we head to the polls this fall, we’re going to wrestle with God’s politics in five different areas, based on the suggestion of my mentor Rev. Dr. Peter Storey: (1) flag and altar (i.e. Christian Nationalism) (2) violence and nonviolence (3) rich and poor (4) inclusion and exclusion (5) care of creation We will begin a longer conversation on these difficult topics with Pastor Lisa as we listen, pray, reflect, study, and allow our political views to be shaped by the politics of Jesus.

Luke: Jesus and the Outsiders

A new discipleship class for adults will begin on August 18 in Room 218-219. The class is based on the book, "Luke: Jesus and the Outsiders, Outcasts, and Outlaws." Written by pastor and bestselling author Adam Hamilton, we will explore the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus as told in the Gospel of Luke. Through Luke’s stories we find Jesus’ care and compassion for all as he welcomes sinners and outcasts. As we study Luke and see Jesus’ concern for those who were considered unimportant, we hear a hopeful and inspiring word for our lives today.
