Ash Wednesday

Join us at 7pm on March 5th, Ash Wednesday, for a special communion service.

The “would-be followers” (as the NRSVUE calls them) have good intentions. They want to follow Jesus, but Jesus calls them to put their money where their mouths are. Somewhere between good intentions and impulsive action lies discipleship. On Ash Wednesday, we make a commitment to align our intentions and our actions, not just in this Lenten season, but throughout our lives.

This service will also be live-streamed to our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@FUMCB

Often the last words of a person take on a special meaning, as if the very essence of their life is somehow embodied by those words. On this holy Thursday, we will remember the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples. In humble servanthood, he washes their feet. Then while they are at the table together, he gives them a new commandment: That they should love one another as he has loved them. This will become their unique identity in the world, their essence, their ultimate reason for being – loving like Jesus.

“He is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” we proclaim today with the ancient church. The women found the empty tomb. Jesus has triumphed over sin and death and risen to new life, accomplishing far more than we could ever ask or imagine. Who but Jesus has such imagination for life? And how does his imagination mingle with reality in our daily lives?
