Director of Communications & Children and Family Ministries

Hours: 40+ hours/week; Sunday-Thursday

Hourly range: $48,000-58,000, depending on experience

 

Position Description: This will be a full-time (40+ hours/week) exempt position at First United Methodist Church of Bloomington, IN (“First Methodist”) as Director of Communications, Children, and Family Ministries. This person will be a strong collaborator and detail-oriented leader for the communications team and for the family ministries team of staff and volunteers. This person will creatively and passionately tell the story of our church and nurture faith formation in children (birth-6th grade) and their families.

Reporting

The DCCFM will report to the Lead and Associate Pastor alternately on a weekly basis or in whatever arrangement as agreed.

 

Responsibilities: In the administration of the above duties, the Director of Communications and Children & Family Ministries can expect to…

  • Administer and supervise core programs and events (Sunday School, VBS, etc.)

  • Evaluate, determine and augment curriculum and resources as necessary

  • Supervise the nursery coordinator and the children’s ministry assistant

  • Create and administer necessary budgets, supplies, and resources

  • Communicate the work of the children and family ministries throughout the congregation and community

  • Create and lead ways to involve our community in the ministries of First Methodist

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, seasonal planning meetings, and Sunday worship; and work collegially for the spiritual health of the entire congregation. 

  • Lead Children’s Council to vision, design, and support ministry

  • Oversee and coordinate the seasonal planning for children and family ministry events and programming; coordinate special events and intergenerational all-church events

  • Conduct and implement Safe Sanctuaries training with all teachers, leaders, care providers, and volunteers

  • Tell the story. Share the impact of the entire congregation on our community via social media, the website, and occasional print communication

·         Envision and guide creative projects including but not limited to: marketing campaigns, worship services, special events, brochures, and special seasonal projects (e.g. Stewardship, Advent, Lent).

·         Create high-quality media content. Share information and ideas. Meet deadlines.

·         Market the church to the community. Promote and support upcoming events. Take video and photographs of events and special services.

·         Supervise the technical director.

·         Coordinate communications with the technical director, pastoral assistant, lay leaders, and other staff members.

·         Other Duties as assigned.

 

Subsidiary Responsibility

Whereas the church will employ a capable Youth Director, the DCCFM must be conversant with that ministry and work collaboratively since most of the families have children in both departments. They must endeavor to attend Youth Councils, so they are up to date with the operations therein. They must also be able to stand in and hold down the fort temporarily anytime there is a transition in that ministry.

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree.

  • Have five or more years (preferred) of experience in a leadership role in Children and/or Family Ministries.

  • Be knowledgeable and supportive of the United Methodist Church and its theological tradition and policy.

  • Have an inclusive theology and be welcoming of all family types.

  • Exhibit strong organizational, management, and leadership skills.

  • Communicate effectively with individuals as well as with large groups of all ages. 

  • Work well with and in teams.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with social media platforms to enhance ministry.

  • Thrive in the ever-changing needs and environment of a growing and vibrant medium-to-large congregation.

·         Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Position: Creative director

Hours: up to 25 hours/week; Sunday-Thursday

Supervisor: Lead Pastor

Hourly range: $17-20/hour, depending on experience

FUNCTION

To tell the story of our church and to serve as director of communications, both virtual and print, for the entire congregation.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

The creative director reports to the lead pastor and works with all other staff members. This position interacts with church leadership and volunteers.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

First Methodist’s Creative Director must be a strong collaborator and leader, who envisions a cutting-edge creative virtual presence and guides the Communications Team to realize that vision. The Creative Director must be able to work independently, but also collaborate effectively with others to produce high-quality creative content on a weekly basis. The Creative Director must be detail-oriented, while also visualizing the big picture and planning ahead for future projects. Although the schedule is flexible, the Creative Director works some evening and weekend hours and must attend weekly Sunday worship, and Tuesday and Thursday morning staff meetings.
