The story of John the Baptist’s beheading is a gruesome mix of lust, seduction, political ambition, scandal, murder, and family dysfunction. For centuries, this tragedy has captured the imagination of artists, writers, and musicians like Titan, Caravaggio, Oscar Wilde, and Richard Strauss. But in the Biblical context it moves beyond tragedy to point to the great struggle between truth and power. How do we read our own tragic stories, and even in the darkness, catch glimmers of God’s grace?
