Our Scripture begins with Jesus being rejected by the hometown crowd and then going about the villages teaching. He calls his disciples to him and then sends them out as well to proclaim repentance, heal, and cast out demons. The catch is that those disciples may take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no bag, no money – and then rely on the hospitality of others for survival. While this passage is challenging to interpret in our own context, it does ask us who we say Jesus is. And if we say he is the Messiah, are we willing to travel light to share the Good News of the Gospel in both word and deed?
