Radical Hospitality: Vulnerability on the Margins

In this famous parable of sheep and goats, Jesus reminds us to care for the hungry, thirsty, sick, imprisoned, and strangers. He adds that “just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Hospitality beckons us into relationships with those who are vulnerable among us. Many times, these people are detached from important human relationships or social institutions. They are almost always overlooked and undervalued by people who are more centrally situated in our communities. This parable encourages us to welcome people on the margins as if they were Christ. In order to do so, we need to better understand vulnerability, power, and the roles of guest and host.
