Flooding My Bed With Tears: Psalms of Lament

  • First United Methodist Church Bloomington 219 East 4th Street Bloomington, IN, 47408 United States (map)

We hope you'll join us for this hybrid in-person and live-streamed Classic Worship service at 10:00am in our sanctuary. It is not necessary to RSVP for this service.

The Hebrew name for the Psalter is Tehillim, which means “praises,” but ironically, there are more Psalms of lament than anything else. In a culture where we often lack space to grieve, let alone cry out and complain to God, the Psalms of lament give voice to our pain and anger. They allow us to open ourselves toward God honestly and fully. When we lament together, we are asking God to create conditions in which it might be possible for us to offer praise again, even when our outside circumstances don’t change. What changes is our experience with suffering, because we are able to break the isolation of silence and know God has heard the cries of our hearts.
