Jesus continues his Sermon on the Plain, not by rounding out the theological feast with a sweet dessert that everyone loves, but by dishing up the hard truth that we are called to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate you. Jesus is saving the brussels sprouts for last. This is one of his most difficult teachings, but Jesus says it is necessary, for our “reward will be great” if we follow it. That “reward” isn’t found in our pocket books, homes, our accolades, but in the person we become as we are radically transformed by his grace.
