Deeply Rooted: A Seedy Kingdom

  • First United Methodist Church Bloomington 219 East 4th Street Bloomington, IN, 47408 United States (map)

We hope you'll join us for this hybrid in-person and live-streamed Classic Worship service at 10:00am in our sanctuary. It is not necessary to RSVP for this service.

We tend to have very specific, and somewhat self-serving, ideas of what God’s Kingdom and God’s blessings should look like. We prefer a version where God makes grand gestures, and does spectacular things; where the Kingdom isn't commonplace and ordinary, but instead is straightforwardly miraculous. And in our perfect version of God’s Kingdom, there are clear, unbreakable boundaries of what is good and what is bad, and who is in and who is out. But our version is not God’s version. According to Mark, Jesus, through a couple of short parables, says the Kingdom of God is like a sleeping gardener, mysterious soil, an invasive weed, and a nuisance flock of birds. What? How does this make any sense? We’ll explore these odd images to discover what Jesus may have meant when he described the Kingdom of God as being like them.
