Praying Curses: Psalms of Anger

  • First United Methodist Church Bloomington 219 East 4th Street Bloomington, IN, 47408 United States (map)

We hope you'll join us for this hybrid in-person and live-streamed Classic Worship service at 10:00am in our sanctuary. It is not necessary to RSVP for this service.

At first glance, it may seem as if the imprecatory psalms (psalms that curse, or convey anger) advocate a way of handling our anger, hate, and disappointment that’s inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus. That’s because they appear to call for violence, revenge, and retaliation; while Jesus clearly tells us to love our enemies, to pray for them, to forgive, and to forego revenge. To ignore our more negative emotions – or to try to cover them up – is not healthy. It may lead to the illusion that we can rely on ourselves – something that’s already too prevalent in our culture of self-sufficiency. Praying our complaints, as the psalmists did, reminds us instead that we really aren’t self-reliant. We really do need God – as well as our church families, the Body of Christ here on earth – to help us through our rough periods.
